Several years ago, I met Kathy Wiseman. I was in the midst of a training program that I was conducting for business leaders and their families. The program was holistic in looking at all phases of a business owner’s life. The participants were concerned about the challenges of passing on wealth, even modest amounts, to their children and grandchildren.

Kathy and I shared a philosophy about this challenge – Wealth must be redefined to enhance lives rather than diminish. They had learned that not talking about it didn’t work.

Kathy developed a set of cards for families to engage family members by sharing their individual interests with each other. These conversations became the gateway to talking about how to use the family’s wealth to enhance lives and use wealth creatively. The results were exceptional.

The cards were developed around 4 forms of Capital:
Human Capital – the members of the family (all members, not just blood – more on this in another conversation)
Financial Capital – the family’s money
Intellectual Capital – each family member’s capacities, education, life experiences Social Capital – philanthropy
